|
In mid July the exhibitions which have previously been on show in Kyoto now are touring Shimane Prefecture. The second display of the Polish-Japanese Print Exhibition in the Shimane Prefectural Museum in Matsue proved to be of the most popular cultural events, and attracted a large audience, as reports Mr. Akira Kurosaki. The exhibition was announced in the local press newspaper Sanin Chuou Shinnpo News Paper Co. The ongoing interest in Polish prints that were exhibited side by side with Japanese prints attracted about a thousand people in the first days of display. A few days of public holidays falling in Japan at that time may have contributed to a to such a large number of visitors at the exhibitions of professional as well as children’s work. The exhibition in Shimane Museum was enhanced by lectures of print artists from Kyoto, President Mr. Akira Kurosaki, who spoke about the Polish print and Mr. Atsue Sakazume, who disclosed the secrets of one of time honored traditional techniques of printmaking - mezzotint. An interesting arrangement of the exhibition in Shimane prepared Ms. Kyoko Takahashi

The 14th International Biennial Print Exhibition, R.O.C.
The International Biennial Print Exhibition was first setup in 1983 through the Council for Cultural Affairs, Republic of China (Taiwan). Traditional printmaking art is the channel for international exchange, while the international art competition and exhibition act as the medium. By providing artists from all around the world an opportunity to observe, study, and publish through participation of this event, the Council for Cultural Affairs has set an example for the appreciation of fine arts in Taiwan.
The International Biennial Print Exhibition, R.O.C is the first of its kind in Taiwan as a competitive exhibition to be open for participants. It was founded at a time when Taiwan had began to be aware of its own existence in the 1980’s, and had planned to make haste in the exchange with foreign cultures. Artistic values between the East and the West were to meet at a common ground, and among other thing, the exhibition also aims to infuse the appreciation for art in the society and to expand upon the spiritual well-being of ourselves. For twenty-eight years, the exhibition stood ground to its original principle even after changing hands of the host organization, changes to the invitational categories, overhaul of the entry instructions, and theme restrictions etc. Each biennial exhibition was well received by the international art scene and had been fully supported by the staggering number of worldwide submissions. The International Biennial Print Exhibition not only reintroduced the art of printmaking to Taiwan, but is also the central hub for art sharing among international printmaking artists.
This year, 1423 pieces by 1128 artists from 69 different nations were submitted to the exhibition. Out of the total, 202 entries made it out of the preliminary and final jury rounds, and then 17 artists were selected by an international committee of jurors to be presented with the awards. These artists demonstrated their artistic talents by shining brightly on the international stage of printmaking, and we can expect them to further inject their influences and creative energy into this world. This 14th International Biennial Print Exhibition at the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts is also host to the “International Printmaking Forum” and “Printmaking to Print – Japanese Print Exhibition” that aim to expand upon the international exchange of printmaking artworks, and to offer art lovers a chance to marvel at the magnificent pieces.(National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts)
Exhibition date: May 29th ~ July 18th 2010

2006-12-14 Steps in the history of print art - symposium |
|
On 14th December 2006 at 10 a.m. the International Print Triennial Society in Kraków together with the National Museum in Kraków organized a symposium "Steps in the history of graphic art". Eminent critics and theorists of art as well as persons from Poland and from abroad who are interested in the subject participated in this enterprise.
The symposium, which is to be reflected in a book which is being prepared for printing, is intended to be an attempt at considering the present situation of graphic art. Those who organized it want not only to state the present situation and define possible opportunities which this medium can take advantage of, but they also want to consider critically the development of graphical procedures in a historical perspective. In this sense the materials and lectures prepared should help to order and exemplify the present status quo of this discipline of art. On the one hand, it seems interesting to diagnose the medium as such as well as possible directions of its evolution in the aspect of new digital technologies and graphic art's connections with other media. On the other hand, presenting a historical background is important as well as the genealogy of graphic practices and procedures which went into a discourse with various tendencies and aesthetical stylistics. One should also bear in mind that the present shape and image of graphic art is doubtlessly a result of wider processes, which took place both in culture and art of the second part of the 20th century. Within the graphic art boundaries important elements of re-valuations were: the challenging of the concept of "the original", the clash of uniqueness and multiplication categories as well as conceptual results of changes within the form and concept of matrix. The technological development of carrier and its modifications resulted in the fact that within the last few decades the concept and form of matrix were redefined many times. As a result of these changes we can nowadays understand matrix as both a form for shaping and copying a work of art as well as a transmission belt of ideas and signs. The consequence of this state of art is e.g. the change of the status of a work of art, which became a visual narration about the world depicted as well as a tale of itself. This "Copernican" revolution is a reason why we can at present consider graphic art both as a medium transposing ideas and aesthetical values and at the same time as a work of art multiplication technique. The symposium under project is to articulate the multi-threaded character of this situation.
Programme and issues considered at the symposium:
Maria Hussakowska – a description and analysis of an institutional being of events of the "biennial" type in the latest history

Dorota Folga-Januszewska – issues related to so called process graphic art and graphical unique specimen (in the 20th century) as a tendency alternative towards the virtualization of an artistic object (e.g. digital graphic art)

Bożena Kowalska – historical and conceptual aspect of relations taking place between traditional graphic art and the geometrical current of contemporary abstraction

Roman Lewandowski – an attempt at diagnosing dependencies and relations between traditional graphic art and intermedium at the example of Polish contemporary art

Anna Markowska – the issue of the idea of 're[petition' and multiplication in American art of the 60's of the previous century – at the example of the minimal and pop-art

Richard Noyce – reflections on the latest four decades of Polish art on the basis of author's experience (at the example of successive editions of International Print Triennial in Kraków)
Jürgen Weichardt – issues concerning the works of Joseph Beuys in relation to the contemporary German graphic art, its visual and material status as well as relations with other media – especially painting and photography.

During the conference a promotion of Danuta Wróblewska's book "Grafika i pamięć" (Graphic art and memory) took place.
